New microphone with
extended dynamic range

The Wireless Sound Level Meter Data Logger NSRTW_mk4 MQTT is similar in form, function and performance to the NSRTW_mk4. It has been designed with an open wireless protocol based on MQTT, for developers and OEMs who need to integrate it to their own platform while using wireless connectivity.

The instrument publishes recorded data (Lpeak, Lmin, Lmax, LEQ) and vital signs to any standard MQTT broker. The communication protocol is fully documented.

Product Description

The Wireless Sound Level Meter Data Logger NSRTW_mk4 MQTT is similar in form, function and performance to the NSRTW_mk4. It has been designed with an open wireless protocol based on MQTT, for developers and OEMs who need to integrate it to their own platform while using wireless connectivity.

It includes a digital MEMS microphone, an accurate date/time clock, a non-volatile 128 Mb recording memory and wireless connectivity. Running on battery, it can record sound pressure levels and publish them through WiFi™ to any standard MQTT broker for a week. Connected to an external USB charger it can record and report for months.

Its very small size allows it to be attached to or embedded within the monitored equipment. Every NSRTW_mk4 MQTT purchased is provided with an Individual Manufacturer's Certificate of Calibration from Convergence Instruments. This all-digital design includes the A, C and Z weighting curves. It is enclosed in a completely weatherproof casing which is designed for indoors and outdoors applications.

Key Differences from NSRTW_mk4

  • Open MQTT protocol — publishes data to any standard MQTT broker instead of Convergence's proprietary cloud
  • No email alarm functions — alarm logic is handled by your own platform
  • No Cloud CIDataSolutions™ compatibility — designed to work with your own cloud infrastructure
  • Fully documented protocol — binary message format documented for integration (download protocol documentation)

Measurement Capabilities

  • A, C and Z weighting curves
  • Integrating Sound-Level Meter — records Lpeak, Lmax, Lmin and LEQ levels
  • Log interval adjustable from 125 ms (8 points per second) up to hours
  • 2048-point real-time power spectrum
  • Recording of acoustic signal (USB audio interface included)

MQTT Protocol Overview

The NSRTW_mk4 MQTT communicates with any standard MQTT broker using a documented binary protocol. The instrument publishes recorded data and vital signs automatically at each connection interval.

Connection Behavior

The instrument connects to the broker at configurable intervals via WiFi. It uses a clean session, QoS 1, and tracks which data has already been published to avoid gaps.

Published Data

At each connection, the instrument publishes: vital signs (battery, temperature, UTC, clock error), and all recorded values not yet acknowledged (Lpeak, Lmin, Lmax, LEQ). Messages contain up to 512 values each (1024 bytes).

Remote Configuration

The instrument can receive new settings via the broker's subscribe topic. Configuration changes are applied at the next connection. Settings include log interval, weighting curve, recording parameters and more.

Two Modes of Operation

Standard Mode: topic strings are defined by the instrument for each message type. Forced Mode: custom Pub/Sub topics defined by the user, for brokers that impose topic strings (e.g. AWS IoT). Both modes can be mixed.

Compatible Brokers

Works with any MQTT broker that supports QoS 1, including:

  • Eclipse Mosquitto (self-hosted)
  • AWS IoT Core
  • Azure IoT Hub
  • HiveMQ
  • Any standard MQTT 3.1.1 broker
